Weekend Reading 05.02
Breaking down the It's Complicated house, plus two South Carolina home tours, a best-seller now out in paperback, a feel-good library story, and more links for your weekend.
Hi friends! And happy Friday. If you liked the breakdown of the Something’s Gotta Give movie house from a couple of weeks ago, I’ve got something fun for you. The same production designer, Jon Hutman, has a new video up of the It’s Complicated house, full of fascinating details, including where they filmed (it wasn’t Santa Barbara) and why Meryl’s character might have wanted a new kitchen (hers was perfection).
I adore It’s Complicated. It’s sweet and funny (John Krasinski alone - he somehow steals the movie from even Alec and Steve). And can we all agree that we love a mid-life heroine with grown kids and good friends?
And then there’s the house. Meryl Streep’s house in that movie is my favorite of all the Nancy Meyers movie houses, which is saying something.
That got me thinking it would be fun to do a poll to see which one you like best. While Nancy has done more than a dozen movies, many with memorable houses, these four feel like the most loved. Do you have a favorite?
Here’s what else I saved to share with you:
From Southern Living: Two homes that have belonged to South Carolina designer Taylor Hill. First, this Greenville, SC bungalow with before and after pics. Also, this more rambling home outside of Charleston. I love them both!
Five Chicago real estate listings for book lovers. Think bookshelves and reading nooks.
I love the idea of having your own house salad.
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt was just released in paperback. This was a book I did not want to read (an octopus as a character?) and ended up loving, like almost everyone else.
From the CTL archives: Three Things About Miami.
And something feel-good to leave you with: Turkish garbage collectors created a library from the books people throw away.
Julie, very fun reading about the It’s Complicated house. The Father of the Bride house (843 S. El Molino in Pasadena) is across the street from a family member. Always fun to see it. It looks a bit smaller in person.
How was Joan Didion’s “Miami”? She’s such a California girl. 🙂
